1975 Topps #278 Paul Lindblad

About Paul Lindblad
Paul Aaron Lindblad was born August 9, 1941, in Chanute, Kansas, and signed with the Kansas City Athletics in 1963 after playing at Chanute Junior College and the University of Kansas. He debuted on September 15, 1965, striking out Bob Allison and Jimmie Hall in a perfect seventh inning against Minnesota. A control pitcher rather than a power arm, Lindblad became a mainstay of Oakland's bullpen through the club's run of five consecutive AL West titles, helping the A's win the 1973 and 1974 World Series before adding a third ring with the 1978 Yankees. He won Game Three of the 1973 Series against the Mets, throwing two shutout innings and retiring Willie Mays on a groundout in the final at-bat of Mays's career. In 1975, the year this card was issued, Lindblad went 9-1 with seven saves and combined with Vida Blue, Glenn Abbott, and Rollie Fingers on a September 28 no-hitter against the Angels. He also set a major-league record playing 385 consecutive games without an error, from 1966 to 1974, and retired after 1978 with a 68-63 record, 64 saves, and the seventh-most appearances (655) by a lefty in history. Lindblad died in 2006 in Arlington, Texas.
