About Frank Taveras
Dominican-born shortstop Frank Taveras signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates for a $3,500 bonus from scout Howie Haak in January 1968. He debuted September 25, 1971, pinch-running for Willie Stargell in a 15-inning game against the Mets; his first card was 1974 Topps' multi-player "Rookie Shortstops" (#607), making this solo 1975 issue, #277, his first card as an established regular. Taveras won the Pirates' shortstop job for good in 1974 and held it through 1978, a slap-hitting burner who led the National League and majors with 70 stolen bases in 1977. That August he capped a bench-clearing brawl with reliever Joe Hoerner by hitting an inside-the-park grand slam off Cincinnati's Doug Capilla. Mentored by Roberto Clemente, whom he called "my guide, my mentor, my counselor," Taveras never collected a World Series ring: left off Pittsburgh's 1971 postseason roster, then traded to the Mets for Tim Foli weeks into the Pirates' 1979 title run. He closed out with the Mets and Expos, retiring in 1982 with 300 stolen bases and a .255 average.
