About Ramon Hernandez
Ramón Hernández, pictured on his 1975 Topps card in his fifth straight season anchoring the Pittsburgh bullpen, was a wiry left-hander out of Carolina, Puerto Rico. Signed by scout Howie Haak in 1959, he bounced through five organizations, two suspensions and a year out of baseball before the Pirates reacquired him in 1971; teammates called him "Mon," short for his given name. He turned in a career year in 1972, going 5-0 with a 1.67 ERA and 14 saves, and pitched in three straight NL Championship Series with Pittsburgh (1972, 1974-75). Close with countryman Roberto Clemente and infielder José Pagán in a clubhouse he called home, Hernández finally found stability after early-career battles with managers. In a nine-season major-league career spanning the Braves, Cubs, Pirates and Red Sox (1967-77), he went 23-15 with a 3.03 ERA and 46 saves in 337 games, adding 21 winters of Puerto Rican League ball. He died in Carolina in 2009.
