1975 Topps #225 Bob Grich

About Bob Grich
Bob Grich entered pro ball as the Orioles' first-round pick (19th overall) in 1967 out of Long Beach's Woodrow Wilson High School. Signed as a shortstop, he tore up the International League at Rochester before debuting with Baltimore on June 29, 1970, and rode the bench that October as the Orioles won the World Series. Grich became a regular in 1972, made his first All-Star team, and took over second base in 1973 after Baltimore traded incumbent Davey Johnson — the form reflected on this 1975 Topps card, issued after his second All-Star season and second of four straight Gold Gloves (1973-76). That year he set the major-league fielding record for second basemen (.995) and helped Baltimore reach the ALCS in 1973 and 1974. A free agent after 1976, Grich joined the Angels, and in the strike-shortened 1981 season led the American League in home runs (22) and slugging while winning a Silver Slugger. He retired in 1986 with 224 home runs and a .266 average over 17 seasons; the BBWAA dropped him from the ballot after one year, but he later posted the highest career JAWS of any eligible position player outside the Hall of Fame and became the first inductee into the Angels' Hall of Fame.
