About Rich Coggins

A left-handed-hitting outfielder out of Garey High School in Pomona, California, Rich Coggins was picked by the Baltimore Orioles in the 21st round of the 1968 draft and reached the majors on August 29, 1972. He broke out the next year, batting .319 with 41 RBI and finishing sixth in American League Rookie of the Year voting as Baltimore won the AL East. He helped the Orioles repeat as division champions in 1974, swiping 26 bases despite a batting slump. Card #167 in the 1975 Topps set still shows Coggins in Orioles orange and black, catching him just before Baltimore shipped him to Montreal that December, with Dave McNally, for Ken Singleton and Mike Torrez. A thyroid ailment then sapped his game; he saw only part-time duty with the Expos, Yankees, and White Sox before his final game on July 7, 1976, closing out a five-year career with a .265 average.
