About Jim Palmer
Jim Palmer broke into pro ball in 1963, signing with the Baltimore Orioles for $50,000 out of Scottsdale High School after impressing scouts in South Dakota's Basin League. He spent his entire 19-year career (1965-1967, 1969-1984) with Baltimore, finishing 268-152 with a 2.86 ERA - the winningest pitcher in the majors during the 1970s, with 186 wins and eight 20-win seasons. Palmer anchored three World Series champions (1966, 1970, 1983) and six AL pennant winners, becoming the youngest pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout in a Series - beating Sandy Koufax in Koufax's final career start, nine days before his 21st birthday - and the only pitcher to win a World Series game in three different decades. His 1975 Topps card catches him mid-peak: that season he took his second AL Cy Young Award and his second ERA title, and opened a three-year run as the league's top winner, on his way to a third Cy Young in 1976 and four straight Gold Gloves (1976-1979). Nicknamed "Cakes" for eating pancakes on the days he pitched, Palmer never allowed a grand slam in his career and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1990, his first year of eligibility, with 92.6% of the vote.
