About Al Bumbry

Al Bumbry reached the majors in September 1972 after an unconventional path: a basketball scholarship at Virginia State College, one season of college baseball, an 11th-round draft by the Orioles in 1968, and two years as a U.S. Army platoon leader in Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star. The speedy outfielder broke out in 1973, batting .337 with a league-leading 11 triples — three in one game against Milwaukee — to win American League Rookie of the Year. Fans called him "The Bee" or "Bumblebee," a nickname that played on the sound of his surname and his quickness on the bases. His 1975 Topps card catches him a year after that rookie burst cooled to a .233 sophomore slump, early in a 13-year Baltimore career that included a 1980 All-Star nod, career highs of 205 hits and 44 steals that season, and a starting role in center field when the Orioles beat the Phillies in the 1983 World Series. Bumbry retired in 1985 with 1,422 hits and 252 stolen bases as an Oriole, and was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1987.
