About Brooks Robinson
Brooks Calbert Robinson Jr. signed with the Orioles out of Little Rock, Arkansas in 1955 for a $4,000 bonus and debuted with Baltimore that September at age 18. He spent all 23 of his major-league seasons as the Orioles' third baseman, retiring in 1977 having played more games at the position (2,870) than anyone in history. An 18-time All-Star, he won 16 consecutive Gold Gloves, still the most by a position player, and still holds career records for putouts, assists, total chances, and double plays at third. Named AL MVP in 1964 after leading the league with 118 RBI and a career-high .317 average, he helped Baltimore to four pennants and titles in 1966 and 1970. In that 1970 World Series he robbed the Reds of hit after hit, prompting Cincinnati's Lee May to nickname him "the Human Vacuum Cleaner," asking "where do they plug Mr. Hoover in?" en route to World Series MVP honors. Robinson entered the Hall of Fame in 1983, his first year of eligibility. His 1975 Topps base card (#50) carries the printed 1974 All-Star flag, and he reappears on the "1964 MVPs" subset card (#202), pairing his AL award with that season's National League winner.
