About Grant Jackson

Grant Dwight Jackson broke in with the Philadelphia Phillies in September 1965, a hard-throwing left-hander out of Fostoria, Ohio, signed by legendary scout Tony Lucadello. A Bakersfield teammate nicknamed him "Buck" for the way he walked to the mound - bow-legged and pigeon-toed, like a cowboy ready to draw. Jackson made the 1969 NL All-Star team as a Phillies starter before a December 1970 trade sent him to Baltimore, where he blossomed into one of the game's top relievers, going 8-0 with a 1.90 ERA in 1973 and later winning three straight games in relief that September. His 1975 Topps card, #303, catches him mid-career with the Orioles, en route to a career that spanned 18 seasons and six teams. Jackson pitched in the World Series for three different clubs - the 1971 Orioles, the 1976 Yankees, and the 1979 Pirates - becoming the winning pitcher in Pittsburgh's Game Seven clincher over Baltimore. He finished 86-75 with 889 strikeouts and 79 saves, later coaching for the Pirates and Reds.
