About Pittsburgh Pirates

The 1975 Topps team card catches the Pirates near the peak of their mid-1970s run, Danny Murtaugh's inset photo marking his fourth term as Pittsburgh's manager, this stretch begun in 1973. The Pirates went 92-69, taking their fifth NL East crown in six seasons by 6½ games over the rival Phillies. The lineup was stacked: Dave Parker broke out with 25 home runs and 101 RBI, Willie Stargell added 22 homers and 90 RBI, Al Oliver and Richie Zisk each cleared 20 home runs, and Manny Sanguillén hit .328 to lead the regulars. Jerry Reuss anchored the rotation with 18 wins and a 2.54 ERA. On September 16, second baseman Rennie Stennett went 7-for-7 in a 22-0 rout of the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the only 20th-century player to do it in a nine-inning game. The postseason ended fast: the Reds swept Pittsburgh in three straight NLCS games en route to the world championship.
