About Dock Ellis
Dock Phillip Ellis Jr. broke into the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1968 out of Los Angeles Harbor College, and by the time of his #385 card he was an established veteran of Pittsburgh's rotation, not a rookie. He is best remembered for the no-hitter he threw against the San Diego Padres on June 12, 1970, a game he later said he pitched under the influence of LSD. His finest season came in 1971: a 19-9 record, a 3.06 ERA, the start for the National League in the All-Star Game, and a World Series championship after the Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles in seven games. That September he started the day Pittsburgh fielded the first all-Black-and-Latino lineup in major-league history. Traded to the New York Yankees in 1976, Ellis helped the club to the American League pennant and won the Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year Award. He retired in 1979 with a 138-119 record and 1,136 strikeouts across 12 seasons, then spent his remaining years as a substance-abuse counselor working with addicts and prison inmates until his death in 2008.
