About Jim Rooker

Left-hander James Phillip Rooker broke into pro ball with the Detroit Tigers as a converted outfielder, signed out of Compton, California in 1960, before switching to pitching full-time in 1966. He debuted with Detroit's 1968 pennant-winning club, then was exposed in the October 1968 expansion draft and spent four seasons anchoring the rotation for the Kansas City Royals. Traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Gene Garber after the 1972 season, Rooker found his best form in NL East title-winning years 1974 and 1975, posting a career-best 15-11 record and 2.78 ERA in '74 and starting Game 2 of that year's NLCS. Pictured on his 1975 Topps #148 card as a Pirate, Rooker went on to win the 1979 World Series with Pittsburgh, starting Game 5 and leaving with a 1-0 deficit before the Pirates rallied to win. He retired with a 103-109 record, a 3.46 ERA, and 976 strikeouts, later becoming a beloved Pirates broadcaster known for his blunt commentary.
