About Tim Foli
Tim Foli was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1968 draft, taken by the Mets out of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California, after a senior season in which he hit .562. He debuted with New York in 1970 and was traded to the Montreal Expos in 1972 in the deal that brought Rusty Staub to New York. Foli anchored the Expos' infield at shortstop for five seasons, the stretch pictured on his 1975 Topps card, highlighted in 1976 when he collected the first cycle in franchise history against the Cubs. A slick fielder with a quick temper, he earned the nickname 'Crazy Horse' for his fiery, hard-nosed style of play. Dealt to Pittsburgh in 1979, Foli hit .333 in that year's postseason as the Pirates rallied from a 3-1 deficit to win Game 7 for the franchise's fifth World Championship. He played 16 big-league seasons for six clubs through 1985, finishing with 1,515 hits and a reputation as one of the toughest shortstops of his era to strike out.
