1975 Topps #34 Steve Renko

About Steve Renko
Steve Renko was a three-sport standout at the University of Kansas, quarterbacking the Jayhawks alongside Gale Sayers and drawing a 1966 AFL draft pick from the Raiders, but he chose baseball after signing with the Mets in 1965. The expansion Montreal Expos acquired him on June 15, 1969, in the trade that sent Donn Clendenon to New York, where Clendenon went on to win that October's World Series MVP. Renko anchored Montreal's rotation through 1976, ranking among the franchise's top five pitchers with 68 career wins. His best season came in 1973, when he went 15-11 with a 2.81 ERA, leading the Expos in wins, complete games, strikeouts and innings — the form captured on his 1975 Topps #34 card, issued the year before Montreal traded him to the Cubs. He pitched 15 major-league seasons for seven clubs, finishing 134-146 with 1,455 strikeouts, and helped the 1982 Angels win the AL West. In 1979 with Boston, he carried a no-hitter into the ninth at Oakland before rookie Rickey Henderson broke it up with a double.
