About Dusty Baker

Johnnie B. "Dusty" Baker Jr. broke in with the Atlanta Braves as a September call-up in 1968 after Hank Aaron personally recruited him to sign, promising to look after him like his own son. His nickname dates to boyhood, for a habit of playing in a bare dirt patch in the backyard; his mother refused to call him "Dirty," so "Dusty" it became. Baker won a regular outfield job in Atlanta in 1972, hitting .321, then set career highs in 1973 with 174 hits, 21 homers and 99 RBI. He stood on deck on April 8, 1974, when Aaron's 715th home run passed Babe Ruth. Card #33 catches his final Atlanta season before a trade to the Dodgers, and its back cartoon garbles Lefty Grove's name as "Groves'" instead of "Grove's." In Los Angeles, Baker made two All-Star teams, won a Gold Glove and two Silver Sluggers, took the first-ever NLCS MVP in 1977, and helped the Dodgers to the 1981 World Series title. He retired in 1986 with a .278 average, 242 homers and 1,013 RBI, then built a long managerial career - three-time NL Manager of the Year with San Francisco, capped by a 2022 World Series title with Houston that made him one of the few men to win it all as both player and manager.
