About Mike Lum

Mike Lum signed with the Milwaukee Braves in June 1963 after graduating from Honolulu's Roosevelt High School, where he'd starred as a football quarterback, and briefly attended Brigham Young University before turning pro. Converted to the outfield in the minors, he debuted with Atlanta on September 12, 1967, singling in his first big-league at-bat, and played 15 seasons (1967-1981) as an outfielder-first baseman for the Braves, Reds, and Cubs, plus a final year in Japan with the Yokohama Taiyo Whales. With Atlanta, Lum posted a career-high .294 average with 16 homers in 1973, and later reached his only World Series with the 1976 champion Reds. A premier pinch-hitter, he led the NL with 17 pinch hits in 1979 and finished with exactly 100 for his career. Lum was the first American of Japanese ancestry to reach the majors, and as of 2017 still led all Hawai'i-born players in career games (1,517). His 1975 Topps card (#154) catches him mid-career in Atlanta, three seasons before that World Series ring.
