1975 Topps #393 Gary Gentry

About Gary Gentry
Gary Gentry was a hard-throwing right-hander out of Phoenix, Arizona, who set a national junior college strikeout record at Phoenix College before transferring to Arizona State, where he went 17-1 with a college-record 229 strikeouts and helped the Sun Devils win the 1967 College World Series title, earning All-America and National College Player of the Year honors. The Mets signed him in the 1967 secondary draft, and just two years later the 22-year-old rookie broke camp in New York's 1969 rotation behind Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman. He clinched the National League East with a four-hit shutout of the Cardinals that September, then started Game Three of the "Miracle Mets" World Series against Baltimore, holding the Orioles scoreless into the seventh before Nolan Ryan closed out the win. Gentry pitched for New York through 1972, then moved to the Braves, the club pictured on this 1975 Topps card, his final big-league season before elbow and tendon surgeries ended his career at 46-49 with 615 strikeouts.
