About Buzz Capra

Born Lee William Capra, he picked up "Buzz" from a neighbor as a child and carried the nickname through a big-league career that turned electric for one summer in Atlanta. A shortstop-turned-pitcher at Illinois State, he was a 27th-round Mets pick in 1969 and reached the majors in September 1971, later sitting on New York's 1973 World Series roster without appearing in the Series. Sold to the Braves in 1974, Capra earned a save the night Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run, then took over the rotation in May and caught fire — nine straight wins, a team-record 26 consecutive scoreless innings, and NL Player of the Month honors in June — on his way to a lone All-Star nod and the 1974 NL ERA crown at 2.28, edging teammate Phil Niekro. That title lands him alongside Oakland's Catfish Hunter on his 1975 Topps League Leaders card (#311), with his flagship card at #105. Arm trouble cut his effectiveness after 1975; he finished 31-37, 3.87 ERA, with the Mets and Braves from 1971-77. Capra died in May 2026 at 78.
