About Ron Reed

A rare two-sport standout, Ron Reed starred at forward for Notre Dame before the Detroit Pistons drafted him in the third round of the 1965 NBA Draft; he played two NBA seasons while also pitching in the Braves' farm system, then committed to baseball full-time. The 6-foot-6 right-hander debuted with Atlanta in 1966, moved into the rotation in 1968, and made his only All-Star team that season. A career-high 18 wins in 1969 helped the Braves capture the first NL West title and reach the postseason for the first time since the move to Atlanta. On April 8, 1974, Reed was the winning pitcher the night Hank Aaron's 715th home run passed Babe Ruth. Pictured here in his final season as a Brave — he was traded to St. Louis that May and to Philadelphia that December — Reed became a bullpen fixture, pairing with Tug McGraw to help the 1980 Phillies win the franchise's first World Series title. He retired in 1984 with 146 wins, 103 saves and 1,481 strikeouts.
