About Carlton Fisk

Carlton Fisk, a New Hampshire farm kid nicknamed "Pudge" as a chubby youngster, was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the January 1967 amateur draft out of the University of New Hampshire. He made his major-league debut in September 1969, returned to the minors through 1971, then broke through in 1972 as the first player unanimously voted American League Rookie of the Year, also winning a Gold Glove. His 1975 Topps card (#80) carries the printed All-Star flag marking his third straight selection, made in 1974. Fisk's signature moment came that October: his twelfth-inning home run off the left-field foul pole in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series, punctuated by his arm-waving dash down the line, remains one of the sport's most replayed images. He caught a then-record 2,226 games and, at retirement, held the all-time home run mark for a catcher with 376. An 11-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger winner across 24 seasons with the Red Sox and Chicago White Sox, Fisk was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000, then insisted his Red Sox Hall of Fame plaque credit New Hampshire, not Vermont, as his hometown.
