About Bill Lee

Bill Lee's 1975 Topps card #128 catches him in the middle of his finest big-league season, one that ended in a legendary World Series showdown with Cincinnati. Drafted by Boston in the 22nd round in 1968 out of USC, where he'd helped the Trojans win the 1968 College World Series, Lee reached the majors in 1969 and worked mostly out of the bullpen for four seasons before Boston made him a full-time starter in 1973, launching three straight 17-win years and a lone All-Star selection that season. In the 1975 Series against the Reds, he started Games 2 and 7, leaving each with a lead Boston couldn't protect, including a Game 7 eephus pitch Tony Perez turned into a decisive homer. Former Red Sox infielder John Kennedy hung the nickname "Spaceman" on Lee for his outspoken, unfiltered opinions on everything from Greenpeace to Boston busing. Traded to Montreal after the 1978 pennant race, Lee won 16 games in 1979 before retiring in 1982 with a 119-90 record; Boston inducted him into its Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2008 as the franchise's winningest left-hander.
