1975 Topps #129 Rick Monday

About Rick Monday
Rick Monday was the first player ever selected in Major League Baseball's inaugural amateur draft, taken first overall by the Kansas City Athletics in June 1965 after leading Arizona State to the 1965 College World Series title. He debuted in September 1966, made his first All-Star team with Oakland in 1968, and joined the Chicago Cubs in a November 1971 trade for pitcher Ken Holtzman. His 1975 Topps card (#129) catches him mid-tenure in Chicago, a year before his signature moment: on April 25, 1976, the center fielder sprinted in from his position at Dodger Stadium and snatched a burning American flag away from two protesters, drawing a congratulatory phone call from President Gerald Ford. That season he also posted career highs of 32 home runs, 107 runs, and a .272 average. Traded to the Dodgers after 1976, Monday helped Los Angeles to pennants in 1977-78 and the 1981 World Series title before retiring in 1984 with 241 homers and a .264 average. He later became a longtime Dodgers broadcaster and is not enshrined in Cooperstown.
