1975 Topps #63 Steve Swisher

About Steve Swisher
Steve Swisher's 1975 Topps card (#63) captures his rookie season, a year after the Ohio University product debuted with the Chicago Cubs on June 14, 1974. A first-round pick by the crosstown White Sox in 1973, Swisher arrived in Chicago that December in the trade that sent Ron Santo to the South Side, joined by Steve Stone, Ken Frailing and Jim Kremmel. He became the Cubs' primary catcher, and in 1976 - batting .236 with five home runs and 42 RBI - was chosen as Chicago's lone All-Star, a selection ESPN later flagged among the weaker picks in the game's history; he did not appear in the contest. Traded to St. Louis in December 1977 and later to San Diego, Swisher closed a nine-year career in 1982 with a .216 average, 20 homers and 124 RBI. He later managed extensively in the minors for the Indians and Mets organizations. His son Nick Swisher also reached the majors.
