1975 Topps #315 Don Kessinger

About Don Kessinger
Don Kessinger anchored the Chicago Cubs infield for eleven seasons after arriving from the University of Mississippi, where he was a two-sport All-American in baseball and basketball. Signed by the Cubs in 1964, he reached the majors that September and took over as regular shortstop in 1965, switch-hitting at manager Leo Durocher's urging and forming a nine-year double-play partnership with second baseman Glenn Beckert. Kessinger made six All-Star teams (1968-1972, 1974) and won Gold Gloves in 1969 and 1970, leading National League shortstops in assists four times and putouts three times. He anchored the celebrated 1969 Cubs infield that held first place for most of the season before a late collapse to the "Miracle" Mets, and that year set a since-broken major-league record with 54 consecutive errorless games at shortstop. Traded to St. Louis in 1975 and later to the White Sox, Kessinger closed his playing days as the last player-manager in American League history, running the 1979 White Sox. His 1975 Topps card, issued for what proved his final season as a Cub, captures him at the position he defined for a generation of Wrigley Field fans.
