About Rick Reuschel
Rick Reuschel, a Western Illinois University product the Cubs took in the third round of the 1970 draft, reached Chicago in June 1972 after a 26-8 run through the minors at Huron, San Antonio, and Wichita. His 1975 Topps card catches him in the middle of a twelve-year Cubs tenure (1972-81, 1983-84) built on a sinker-heavy, pitch-to-contact style that made him a workhorse on mostly losing teams. He broke out in 1977, winning 20 games and finishing third in Cy Young voting, and on August 21, 1975, he and older brother Paul combined on a 7-0 shutout of the Dodgers, the only siblings in major-league history to do so. Nicknamed "Big Daddy" because his surprising athleticism belied his portly build, Reuschel later starred for the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning the 1985 Comeback Player of the Year award, then for the San Francisco Giants, making the 1989 All-Star team as a 40-year-old starter and pitching in that fall's World Series. He retired in 1991 with 214 career wins, three All-Star selections, and two Gold Gloves.
