About Jerry Morales
Jerry Morales (Julio Rubén Morales y Torres) was born February 18, 1949, in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico. As a teenager he attended a clinic run by countryman Roberto Clemente, who taught him outfield fundamentals he credited for his whole career. Signed by the Mets in 1966, Morales was taken by the Padres in the 1968 expansion draft and became a semiregular by 1972-73. Traded to the Chicago Cubs for four-time All-Star Glenn Beckert on November 7, 1973 — a swap that had Cubs fans asking "Who's Jerry Morales?" — he answered by leading the 1975 Cubs with 91 RBI, the season captured on this card. By 1977 he was an All-Star himself, representing Chicago at Yankee Stadium, though a Sparky Lyle pitch to the knee and a broken finger shortened that season. St. Louis, Detroit, and the Mets followed before he closed his career with the Cubs (1981-83), finishing with a .259 average, 95 homers, and 570 RBI over 15 seasons. He later coached for the Expos and Nationals.
