About Steve Foucault

Steve Foucault was a hard-throwing right-handed reliever who anchored the Texas Rangers' bullpen in the mid-1970s. Drafted by the Washington Senators in the 43rd round of the 1969 amateur draft out of South Georgia College, he debuted with the Rangers on April 7, 1973 and soon became Texas's primary closer. His best season came in 1974, when he went 8-9 with a 2.24 ERA and 12 saves across a workhorse 69 appearances and 144.1 innings, among the American League's heaviest relief workloads that year. Card #283 catches him mid-career in Texas, where he pitched through 1976 before Detroit acquired him on April 12, 1977 in a trade for Willie Horton. He closed out his playing days with the Tigers and Kansas City Royals in 1978, finishing 35-36 with a 3.21 ERA, 307 strikeouts and 52 saves in 277 games. Foucault later worked as an Arlington, Texas police officer before returning to baseball as a pitching coach, guiding the independent Newark Bears to the 2007 Atlantic League championship.
