About Tom Grieve
Tom Grieve broke into pro ball as the Washington Senators' first-round pick — sixth overall in 1966 — out of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, a deal that let him finish his degree at Michigan before reporting to the minors each summer. He debuted in July 1970, moved with the franchise to Texas in 1972, and split outfield and DH duty for the Rangers through 1977 before closing his career with the Mets (1978) and Cardinals (1979). His 1975 Topps card catches him mid-breakthrough: manager Frank Lucchesi finally handed him an everyday job that August, and Grieve hit .283 down the stretch, a springboard to his best season in 1976 — a team-leading 20 homers, 81 RBIs and the club's Player of the Year award. Known as "TAG" for his initials, he became "Mr. Ranger" as a member of the 1972 inaugural team who later ran the club as general manager (1984-94, engineering the Rafael Palmeiro-Jamie Moyer trade) and then broadcast its games for nearly three decades. In 1994 son Ben went second overall, making the Grieves the first father-son duo both taken in a draft's first round. Tom entered the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame in 2010.
