About Texas Rangers
Texas went 44-51 under fiery manager Billy Martin before the Rangers fired him on July 21, 1975, amid friction with the front office; the Yankees named him their manager on August 2. Frank Lucchesi took over and went 35-32 the rest of the way, and the club finished 79-83, third in the AL West, 19 games behind division champion Oakland. The season's headline trade came June 13, when Texas sent pitchers Jim Bibby, Jackie Brown, and Rick Waits plus $100,000 to Cleveland for future Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry. On the field, 1974 AL Rookie of the Year Mike Hargrove hit .303, and shortstop Toby Harrah broke out with a .293 average, 20 homers, and 93 RBI — the franchise's first 20-20 season — earning his second All-Star selection. Reigning AL MVP Jeff Burroughs slumped to .226 but still drove in 94 runs, and the Rangers led the majors with five grand slams.
