About David Clyde

David Eugene Clyde, born April 22, 1955, in Kansas City, Kansas, became one of the most hyped amateurs in baseball history at Houston's Westchester High School, going 18-0 with five no-hitters his senior year. The Texas Rangers made him the first overall pick of the 1973 draft and rushed him straight to the majors; twenty days after his last high school game, the 18-year-old lefty started before a sellout crowd at Arlington Stadium and beat the Minnesota Twins, striking out eight. Owner Bob Short kept Clyde on the roster to boost sagging attendance rather than let him develop in the minors, and the strain on his arm and shoulder derailed what scouts had billed as a Sandy Koufax-caliber career. He went 7-18 for Texas from 1973-1975 before shoulder trouble sent him to the minors, then resurfaced with Cleveland for two seasons (1978-1979) ahead of a failed comeback bid with Houston. His career line: 18-33, 4.63 ERA, 228 strikeouts over parts of five seasons. This 1975 Topps card captures him in his final season on the Rangers' active roster.
