About Jim Fregosi

By 1975, Jim Fregosi was playing out his final Rangers season as a role player, a long way from his prime as the Angels' first true star. Signed by Boston out of Serra High School in San Mateo, California, he reached the majors via the 1960 expansion draft that stocked the new Los Angeles Angels. Fregosi anchored shortstop for eleven seasons, making six All-Star teams (1964, 1966-70) and winning a Gold Glove in 1967 while leading the American League in triples. Fans named him the top player in Angels history in 1969, and the club later retired his No. 11. In December 1971 he was traded to the Mets for four players, most notably Nolan Ryan - a deal history has never let him forget, though Fregosi always pointed out the decision belonged to Angels GM Harry Dalton, not him. Texas acquired him in mid-1973, using him mainly as a backup first baseman through 1977. He went on to manage four clubs, taking the Angels to their first postseason in 1979 and the Phillies to the 1993 NL pennant.
