About Joe Lovitto

Joe Lovitto arrived in pro ball as the second overall pick of the 1969 January draft, taken by the Washington Senators out of San Pedro High School in California, one slot behind fellow prep star Derrel Thomas. A switch-hitter with blazing speed and a strong arm, he shot through the low minors — hitting .326 at Triple-A Denver in 1971 — and by 1972 was starting in center field on Opening Day for the expansion-era Texas Rangers under manager Ted Williams. Shoulder, elbow, and leg injuries repeatedly sidelined him, and a brash, unpolished approach frustrated Williams and successor Whitey Herzog. Lovitto played four seasons in Texas (1972-75), finishing a .216 hitter with 4 home runs, 53 RBI, and 22 stolen bases in 306 games. His 1975 Topps card arrived in what proved his final major-league season — a snapshot of a talent that, in Billy Martin's words, was derailed purely by injuries. Traded to the Mets that December, he was released in spring training 1976 and never played again.
