About Toby Harrah

Colbert Dale "Toby" Harrah was born October 26, 1948, in Sissonville, West Virginia — his grandmother, disliking his given name, nicknamed him Toby, and it stuck for a 17-year big-league career. Scout Tony Lucadello signed him for the Philadelphia Phillies in December 1966; the Washington Senators drafted him a year later, and he debuted on September 5, 1969. Harrah took over as the Senators/Rangers' regular shortstop in 1971, the franchise's final season in Washington. His 1975 Topps card, #131, catches him mid-breakout: that year he earned his second All-Star selection and posted a career-best 93 RBIs for Texas. He made two more All-Star teams, in 1976 and after a 1978 trade to Cleveland that swapped him for Buddy Bell, in 1982, when he hit a career-high .304 with 100 runs. A patient hitter, Harrah drew more career walks (1,153) than strikeouts (868) and closed his playing days back in Texas, where on August 6, 1986, he hit the first of an MLB-record three grand slams in one game. He received a single Hall of Fame vote in 1992 and joined the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame in 2009.
