About Cesar Tovar
César Tovar, a Venezuelan-born utility man out of Caracas, broke into pro ball in 1959 with Class D Geneva of the Cincinnati chain before Minnesota acquired him for pitcher Gerry Arrigo ahead of the 1965 season. He anchored the Twins' leadoff spot from 1966-72, helping Minnesota to AL West titles in 1969 and 1970 while sliding across every position on the diamond — an approach that peaked on September 22, 1968, when he became only the second player in major-league history, after Bert Campaneris, to play all nine positions in a single game. He led the AL in doubles and triples in 1970 and in hits in 1971, finishing 7th in the 1967 MVP vote. Nicknamed "Pepito," a cleaned-up rendering of his earthier Venezuelan winter-ball nickname "Pepa e Burra," he later played for the Phillies, Rangers, Athletics and Yankees before retiring in 1976 with 1,546 hits and a .278 average. This card catches him in his second season with Texas. Tovar remains outside Cooperstown but was inducted into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.
