About Tom Bradley
Tom Bradley was a bespectacled Latin major out of the University of Maryland, drafted by the California Angels in the seventh round of the 1968 draft and reaching the majors the next year. Traded to the Chicago White Sox in November 1970, he emerged as a workhorse starter, going 15-15 with six shutouts in 1971 — highlighted by a four-hit shutout of Oakland in which he struck out Reggie Jackson three times — then 15-14 with 209 strikeouts in 1972, making him just the third pitcher in White Sox history, after Ed Walsh and Gary Peters, with two 200-strikeout seasons. Teammates nicknamed him "Omar," after World War II General Omar Bradley. Dealt to the San Francisco Giants for Ken Henderson and Steve Stone that winter, Bradley won 13 games in 1973 before a shoulder injury eroded his effectiveness. His 1975 Topps card captures his final big-league season, closing a seven-year career at 55-61 with a 3.72 ERA and 691 strikeouts.
