About Dave Kingman

Dave Kingman broke into pro ball as a two-way star at USC, helping the Trojans win the 1970 College World Series before San Francisco took him with the first pick of that year's secondary draft. He debuted with the Giants on July 30, 1971, homering in his second game and hitting for the cycle the following April. His #156 1975 Topps card catches him in a Giants uniform for the last time - by the time it reached shelves, San Francisco had sold his contract to the Mets, where the 6'6" slugger set club home run records with 36 in 1975 and 37 in 1976, earning the first of three All-Star selections. Nicknamed "Kong" and "King Kong" for his size and light-tower power, and "Sky King" - after the 1950s TV show - for towering fly balls, he led the National League in homers in 1979 (48) and 1982, finishing with 442 career home runs and 16 grand slams, tied for fourth all-time. He won 1984 AL Comeback Player of the Year honors with Oakland but was never elected to the Hall of Fame.
