About Garry Maddox

A second-round pick of the San Francisco Giants in the January 1968 draft, Garry Maddox walked away from his first pro season in a bonus dispute and joined the U.S. Army, serving a tour in Vietnam before a hardship discharge brought him home to baseball. He debuted with the Giants on April 25, 1972, replacing his boyhood idol Willie Mays in center field, and his 1975 Topps card (#240) catches him as a Giant just weeks before the trade that defined his career: on May 4, 1975, San Francisco sent him to Philadelphia for Willie Montañez. As a Phillie, Maddox became the "Secretary of Defense," a nickname Daily News columnist Bill Conlin coined in 1976 after watching him run down everything hit to center, inspiring the line that two-thirds of the earth is covered by water and the other third by Garry Maddox. He won eight straight Gold Gloves (1975-1982), scored the pennant-winning run in the 1980 NLCS, and helped Philadelphia capture its first World Series that October. He retired in 1986 with a .285 average, 248 stolen bases, and the Roberto Clemente Award for his charity work.
