About Ron Bryant
Ron Bryant broke in as a 22nd-round pick of the San Francisco Giants out of Davis High School in the 1965 draft, debuting in the majors that September at age 19. The left-hander pitched eight big-league seasons, all but the last with San Francisco. After a breakout 1972 (14-7, 2.90 ERA), he had the finest year by a Giants lefty since Carl Hubbell: a 24-12 mark in 1973 that led the National League in wins, tied him with Wilbur Wood for the major-league lead, and made him the NL's lone 20-game winner that season. He finished third in the Cy Young voting behind Tom Seaver and Mike Marshall. Teammates called him "Bear," a nickname equipment manager Mike Murphy coined for his chunky build, walk and curly hair; Bryant kept a three-foot teddy bear, dressed in his own jersey, in his locker. A swimming-pool accident in 1974 spring training left him with a torso gash requiring 25 stitches, and his career unraveled; he retired in 1975 after a brief run with St. Louis.
