About John Milner

John Milner broke into pro ball as a 14th-round pick by the Mets in 1968 out of South Fulton High School in East Point, Georgia, reaching the majors on September 15, 1971. A muscular left-handed pull hitter, he earned the nickname "the Hammer" for his resemblance to and admiration of fellow Georgian Hank Aaron, finishing third in the 1972 NL Rookie of the Year vote after a team-high 17 home runs. Splitting time at first base and left field for the Mets through 1977, he set a career-best 23 homers in 1973 as New York upset Cincinnati's "Big Red Machine" for the pennant, the season before his 1975 Topps card (#264) was issued. Traded to Pittsburgh in a four-team, eleven-player deal, he became a valued reserve, batting .333 as the Pirates beat Baltimore in the 1979 World Series. He closed his 12-year career with Montreal and Pittsburgh in 1982, finishing with 131 home runs, a .249 average, and more career walks than strikeouts, and later testified candidly about cocaine use during baseball's 1985 Pittsburgh drug trials. Milner died of cancer in 2000 at age 50.
