1975 Topps #263 Jim Perry

About Jim Perry
Jim Perry broke into professional ball in 1956 after signing with Cleveland out of Campbell College, and by 1959 the right-hander was already trusted in pennant-race relief duty, striking out four Yankees in two scoreless innings in a memorable rookie appearance at Yankee Stadium. He won 18 games for Cleveland in 1960, was traded to Minnesota in 1963, and became a workhorse starter under pitching coach Johnny Sain, helping the Twins to the 1965 World Series and the 1969 AL West title. His best season came in 1970: a league-leading 24 wins and the AL Cy Young Award, making him and younger brother Gaylord Perry the only siblings to each win a Cy Young. A three-time All-Star (1961, 1970, 1971), Perry was dealt to Detroit in 1972 before a March 1974 trade reunited him with Gaylord in Cleveland, where the brothers combined for 38 of the club's 77 wins that year, the pairing captured on this 1975 Topps card. Traded to Oakland that May, Perry threw a one-hitter against Baltimore before retiring in August with 215 career wins, then scouted for the A's, signing future catcher Terry Steinbach.
