About Dave Duncan

Dave Duncan broke in with the Kansas City Athletics as an 18-year-old bonus-baby catcher in 1964, then developed in the minors alongside future stars Reggie Jackson and Rick Monday before becoming Oakland's primary receiver by 1971, when he made the American League All-Star team as an injury replacement for Ray Fosse. Prized for his defense and pitch-calling more than his bat, he caught 20-game winners Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter and helped the A's win the 1972 World Series. Traded to Cleveland in March 1973, Duncan caught for the Indians in 1973 and 1974 - the tenure pictured on this 1975 Topps card - before a February 1975 trade sent him to Baltimore for Boog Powell, just ahead of the season the card covers. He retired in 1977 with a .214 average, 109 home runs and a .984 fielding percentage, then built a far more celebrated second act as pitching coach for the Indians, Mariners, White Sox, Athletics and Cardinals, guiding four Cy Young winners and three more World Series champions alongside manager Tony La Russa, a bond dating to their first day together as A's bonus babies in 1963.
