1975 Topps #38 Buddy Bell

About Buddy Bell
Born August 27, 1951, in Pittsburgh, David Gus "Buddy" Bell was the son of four-time All-Star outfielder Gus Bell, part of a family that would produce three generations of big leaguers. Cleveland drafted him in 1969, and after three seasons in the Indians' farm system he debuted on April 15, 1972, initially as an outfielder before settling in as Cleveland's regular third baseman. On this 1975 card, Bell was in his fourth full season with the Tribe; that July 5 he broke an early-season slump with a career day against Boston — a grand slam, a solo homer, and a run-scoring double for six RBIs, en route to a .271 year. Weeks later he turned down a spot as the AL's backup All-Star third baseman, telling manager Alvin Dark he hadn't earned it over players having better seasons. Bell went on to make five All-Star teams, win six straight Gold Gloves (1979-84) and a Silver Slugger (1984) with the Rangers, and retired in 1989 with a .279 average, 2,514 hits, and 201 homers across 18 seasons with the Indians, Rangers, Reds, and Astros. He later managed the Tigers, Rockies, and Royals, and sons Mike and David also reached the majors.
