About Tom Hilgendorf
Thomas Eugene Hilgendorf signed with the Cardinals as a free agent in 1960 out of St. Mary's High School in Clinton, Iowa, but didn't reach the majors until 1969, debuting with St. Louis at age 27. The left-handed reliever landed in Cleveland in 1972, where his best season came in 1973 — a 5-3 record with six saves for a last-place club. His 1975 Topps card (#377) shows him in an Indians uniform, though a trade sent him to Philadelphia before Opening Day; he made it count, posting a career-best 7-3 record and 2.14 ERA in what proved his final big-league season. Hilgendorf's most remembered moment came in Cleveland: struck by a chair during the notorious Ten Cent Beer Night riot on June 4, 1974, he was back pitching the very next night, and weeks later dove fully clothed into a motel pool near Disneyland to save a drowning 13-year-old boy. He closed his six-season career (1969-70, 1972-75) with a 19-14 record, 3.04 ERA, and 14 saves.
