About Steve Yeager

Steve Yeager reached the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 2, 1972, five years after the club drafted him out of Meadowdale High School in Dayton, Ohio. A right-handed-hitting catcher renowned for his arm — Lou Brock called him "the best-throwing catcher in the game" — Yeager took over as the Dodgers' primary catcher and backstopped Los Angeles to World Series appearances in 1974, 1977, 1978, and 1981. On September 6, 1976, he nearly died when a broken bat splintered into his neck; trainer Bill Buhler's response, a hanging throat guard fitted to the catcher's mask, became standard equipment for catchers and umpires. Yeager was back behind the plate three weeks later and later caught Jerry Reuss's 1980 no-hitter. His finest hour came in the 1981 World Series win over the Yankees, when he shared MVP honors with Ron Cey and Pedro Guerrero after two home runs, including a series-turning shot off Ron Guidry in Game Five. Issued the year before that frightening injury, his 1975 Topps card shows him as an established Dodgers regular. He retired with 102 home runs across 15 seasons, all but his final year spent in Los Angeles.
