About Los Angeles Dodgers
Coming off their 1974 pennant, the Dodgers ran into the Big Red Machine in 1975 — Cincinnati won 108 games and buried Los Angeles by 20, leaving Walter Alston's club at 88-74, second in the NL West. Steve Garvey collected 210 hits and hit a team-best .319; Ron Cey drove in 101 runs with 25 homers; Davey Lopes stole an NL-leading 77 bases, including a then-record 38 straight. The rotation, tops in the league in ERA for a fourth straight year, was paced by Andy Messersmith's 19 wins and Burt Hooton, acquired from the Cubs in May, who closed the season on a 12-game winning streak. That December, arbitrator Peter Seitz freed Messersmith and Dave McNally from the reserve clause, opening the door to free agency. It was Alston's final full season before Tommy Lasorda took over partway through 1976.
