About Don Sutton
Don Sutton signed with the Dodgers out of Whittier College and broke into the majors in 1966 at age 21, taking a rotation spot alongside Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and Claude Osteen and striking out 209 batters, the highest total for a rookie since 1911. Pictured here in 1975 during a run of four All-Star selections (1972, 1973, 1975, 1977), the right-hander was in the middle of a 16-year Dodgers tenure built on remarkable durability — 200-plus innings in 20 of his first 21 seasons and 100-plus strikeouts in 21 straight years. He started and won MVP honors in the 1977 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, and pitched the Dodgers to pennants in 1974, 1977 and 1978, though Los Angeles lost all three World Series. His only 20-win season came in 1976 (21-10). Sutton later pitched for Houston, Milwaukee, Oakland and California before finishing his career back with the Dodgers in 1988, retiring with 324 wins, a 3.26 ERA and 3,574 strikeouts, seventh all-time. Accusations that he doctored baseballs with sandpaper earned him the nickname "Black and Decker." He reached Cooperstown in 1998, his fifth year on the ballot, and the Dodgers retired his No. 20 that same year.
