1975 Topps #244 Bill Buckner

About Bill Buckner
Bill Buckner's No. 244 card catches him as an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers on the eve of a franchise-changing trade. Selected by L.A. in the second round of the 1968 draft, Buckner reached the majors that September and helped the Dodgers to the 1974 National League pennant, batting .314 and homering off Catfish Hunter in the World Series. A severe ankle injury in 1975 sapped his speed and pushed the Cubs to deal for him before 1977, moving him to first base full time. There he won the 1980 NL batting title at .324, made the 1981 All-Star team, and twice set the major-league assist record for first basemen. Traded to Boston in 1984, Buckner played all 162 games in 1985 and set the AL assist mark, but his tenth-inning error in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series became one of baseball's most replayed moments. He retired in 1990 with 2,715 hits and 498 doubles, later embraced again by Red Sox fans after their 2004 title.
