About Steve Garvey
Steve Garvey anchored first base for one of baseball's most enduring infields, playing alongside Ron Cey, Bill Russell, and Davey Lopes for eight and a half seasons starting in 1973. Drafted by the Dodgers out of Michigan State in 1968, he reached the majors in 1969 and won the 1974 National League MVP award after becoming one of only two players ever voted into the All-Star Game as a write-in candidate. He added four straight Gold Gloves (1974-77) and was NLCS MVP twice, homering four times against the Phillies in 1978 and delivering a walk-off shot for the Padres in Game 4 of the 1984 NLCS after signing with San Diego in December 1982. Garvey helped the Dodgers win the 1981 World Series, made ten All-Star teams, and set the NL record with 1,207 consecutive games played. Nicknamed "Mr. Clean" for his squeaky-clean, all-American image, he retired with a .294 average, 272 homers and 1,308 RBI — fifteen years on the BBWAA ballot, but no Hall of Fame plaque. His 1975 Topps base card (#140) carries the printed 1974 All-Star flag, and he also appears on the "1974 MVPs" subset card (#212) alongside Texas Rangers slugger Jeff Burroughs.
