About Horacio Pina
Horacio Piña was a wiry, submarine-style Mexican reliever who worked in the majors across eight seasons, 1968 to 1978. He debuted with the Cleveland Indians, moved to the Washington Senators/Texas Rangers, and had his best big-league season in 1972 with Texas, career highs of 15 saves and 60 strikeouts. Traded to Oakland for Mike Epstein, he helped anchor the A's 1973 bullpen and became the first Mexican-born player to win a World Series ring. Dealt to the Cubs and then the Angels in 1974 — the club pictured on his 1975 Topps card, #139 — he split that season between Chicago and California before closing his career with two appearances for the 1978 Phillies. Countrymen called him El Ejote, "The Stringbean," for his lanky frame and whipping sidearm motion. He later thrived as a Mexican League starter, throwing a perfect game in 1978, and was inducted into Mexico's Professional Baseball Hall of Fame that same year — a fitting coda for a busy bullpen arm many casual fans never noticed.
