About Denny Doyle

Robert Dennis Doyle signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as a free agent after going unselected in the 1965 draft, breaking in as a slick-fielding second baseman in 1970. After four seasons in Philadelphia he was traded to the California Angels in December 1973, the club pictured on this 1975 Topps card (#187), before a June 1975 trade sent him to the Boston Red Sox for the best stretch of his career. Doyle batted a career-high .310 in 89 games for Boston that year, reeling off a league-best 22-game hitting streak, and started at second base in the ALCS and the 1975 World Series against Cincinnati. He is remembered for being thrown out at home in the bottom of the ninth of Game Six, the play that helped set up Carlton Fisk's iconic walk-off homer, yet he still hit safely in all seven games of that Series, the only player on either roster to do so. Doyle played through 1977, finishing with a .250 career average over 944 games, then ran Doyle Baseball Camps with his brothers Brian and Blake.
